Even when it feels like the dream is slipping away, Alex Iwobi isn’t ready to press the panic button just yet.
In a recent interview with Supersport Football, the Fulham and Super Eagles midfielder opened up about Nigeria’s uncertain road to the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Despite suffering defeat in the crucial playoff against DR Congo, Iwobi made it clear that there is still a flicker of hope left — and it’s a hope shared by both the players and the entire football family in Nigeria.
“We are still waiting,” Iwobi said when asked about Nigeria’s chances. “Hopefully we can go to the World Cup.”
That “waiting” isn’t idle optimism. It comes with a real twist: the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has formally lodged a petition with FIFA over alleged eligibility breaches by the Democratic Republic of Congo during their World Cup qualifier. The Eagles argue that DR Congo fielded players who were not eligible under both FIFA rules and the Congolese constitution — a claim that could potentially reopen the door for Nigeria.
Tough Choices and Bigger Dreams
Iwobi’s feelings go beyond personal ambition. When asked whether he would prefer a 2025 AFCON title or a World Cup berth, he paused — honest and reflective.
He pointed out that while lifting the AFCON trophy would be a dream for Nigerian football, many of his teammates have never played at a World Cup before. And for them — and for the millions of Nigerians dreaming weekly with every tweet and match thread — just stepping onto football’s biggest stage would be unforgettable.
“That’s why it’s tough,” he said. “I don’t know… I don’t know.”
What This Means for Super Eagles Fans
Right now, it’s a waiting game — and one filled with mixed emotions. Nigeria’s supporters have seen the Eagles lose a heartbreaking shootout, but the NFF’s appeal to FIFA gives fans something to cling to. Whether that challenge succeeds or not remains to be seen, but Iwobi’s stance is clear: they are not giving up without a fight.
